The Nilgiris are home to the honey bee, Apis dorsata which dot the rocks with giant honey combs. Kurumbas, an indigenous group of the Nilgiris have been collecting honey from these since time immemorial. In each region certain combs are considered sacred and left unharvested thus preserving the gene pool. This wild honey is valued priceless as medicine and food. The golden beeswax used for making these candles and balms is a by-product of honey-hunting by Kurumbas.
