Prior to finding himself in the chilly hills of Ooty, Abhijeet worked for multiple restaurants in India, from the paradisiacal Andaman Islands to the French inspired town of Pondicherry. His first work in a restaurant was as a washer but it was soon noticed that he had a deeper interest in cooking. He would help the head chef in the kitchen, eventually leading him to becoming a chef himself! Although he was happier to develop his passion for cooking he was never fully satisfied with restaurants he worked for: some micromanaged too much and did not give space for freedom in the kitchen, others places were simply too hot and he was concerned for his health. A friend recommended he look into a different restaurant in Ooty called Place to Bee. It was 2014 and the place was still quite new, a kitchen that needed preparation and not yet on the map as an eatery destination, even in Ooty. Yet Abhijeet saw great potential! After months of preparation, rocky days with maintenance issues that set the restaurant back, and waiting and hoping for customers to come, there were finally positive results. It was the holiday season in December 2014 and customers started rolling. From then on, Abhijeet has sought to make Place to Bee the #1 restaurant, and according to Trip Advisor it is #1 place to eat in Ooty! Yet he still hopes to make it one of the, if not the, top places to eat in India. He loves the work environment of Place to Bee because the kitchen is his domain, in which he has full creative autonomy and responsibility. Additionally, he loves that he is working with all good people, from those in the kitchen to upper management. Even when offers of higher wage are offered to him to work at other restaurants, he declines them. Place to Bee is a place of good people, a place where passion is encouraged, and a place of purpose. We are looking forward to keeping him in the Last Forest family for some time longer!
